This clip from family guy is bringing up issues of the political world. In it, two people are running for mayor- Mayor West and Mrs. Griffin. The people are asking the two in the race about what they will do if they receive the office. The candidates responses are quite absurd.
What is this clip implying about voters?
What is being criticized?
Why do you think the undecided voters are portrayed as unintelligent?
I think they chose to portray undecided voters as unintelligent maybe because the choice of candidates is seemingly simple. You can either choose Republic or Democratic. This may also be the reason they are being criticized as well.
ReplyDeleteI find this clip interesting mostly because of the two different ways the two candidates responded to the public's questions. Mayor West based his answer on how great Democracy in America is. The way he said his answer is particularly important because he showed his excellent public speaking skills, which got most of the voters on his side in the beginning without directly answering the question. When Lois gets to answer questions she uses an odd tone and gives simple answers, and the people still side with her as well. I think this shows how votes are easy to get if you tell the voters what they want to hear.
ReplyDeleteI believe this clip criticizes is addressing the way voters seem to choose their candidates. They don't listen to what the candidates are say, just how they say it (beginning of clip). I also believe that the clip is poking fun at democrats and republicans by the way the portray the candidates. One, eloquent and personable. The other, simple and down to the point.
ReplyDeleteHow funny it is! The satiric point the clip wanna make is so interesting and total truth in my eyes. The one who will win voters'support is whose answer is short enough and even does not say anything useful. I cannot believe how can this kind of voters vote for the right person who will lead the nation in the future.

ReplyDeleteI find this clip is really interesting especially when the first male candidate went to the voter, sat on the voter's legs and kissed him. Like Patrick says, there have two methods that the candidate "replies" to questions about which people worried are shown in this clip. Besides these two ways, there also have many more "political wisdom" exist in the real world. Not only the responding ways of candidate use to voters' questions, but also the "undecided voters"' reactions to the candidates' responses are pretty ironic. The clip satirizes about the avoidant approaches of politics, and also large part of the voters' wavering stands.
ReplyDeleteUndecided voters are those who cannot make up their mind on their own, so they have to go to debates and let other people tell them who to vote for. For this reason, they are very impressionable, and will respond to things they want to hear. Politics take advantage of this and give some of the simplest answers at debates. The worst part is, a lot of times these undecided voters do react postitvely to the canidates simple answers.
ReplyDeleteI think this clip implies that undecided voters are very impressional and are inclined to vote for candidates who reference someting that they feel strongly about. The tactics that many candidates use in answering questions by avoiding the actual issue in the question is being criticized. I believe undecided voter are portrayed as unintelligent because people assume they are not part of a particular political party and therefore do not know much about politics.
ReplyDeleteWhen Mayor West does not answer but instead beats around it and makes himself sound smart i think they are making fun of the fact that in reality many politicians and business people do that, to take the question and talk around it to make themselves seem educated and start a new topic that they may want to address. The creators of this clip are also criticizing undecided voters and pretty much suggesting that if a candidate says exactly what the undecided voters want to hear then they will receive their votes.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting how the producers portrayed the politicians. I think that in today's society, people ask the candidates questions and they sometimes they do not provide a clear answer. The voters were also being criticized for being gullible when it came to their decision making of each politician. I think the voters were displayed as unintelligent because there are some people in this country who do not educate themselves on politics and merely vote for how the politician has answered the questions.

ReplyDeleteUndecided voters play a major role in elections. I think that family guy pokes at the fact that a candidate who is a captivating speaker who might beat around the bush in terms of his policies can lose the audience in their words. These undecided voters can be easily swayed by these types of candidates. I think that is the main reason Obama was elected, because he is an impeccable speaker.
ReplyDeleteThis clip criticizes undecided voters. Family Guy suggests that undecided constituents are uninformed and, therefore, easily influenced by candidates’ appearance, charisma, or vacant promises.
ReplyDeleteIs this type of reaction only typical of undecided voters?
ReplyDeleteThis clip satirically criticizes both the undecided voters and the politics. To please the undecided voters, the politics just say something, which make the undecided voters feel happy and convincing without really answering the questions. However, the undecided voters have positive reactions to these answers, which reflects their kind of faulty or biased judgment on voting.
ReplyDeleteI think the clip implies that sometimes vague answers for the important issues may be the best to the public because the public are usually not very familiar with the detailed of the politics. Those undecided voters are likely vote randomly according to which candidate's words sound most comfortable. It is funny that people are satisfied and applauding when they hear the answer "911" which actually has nothing to do with the problems about the environment or traffic. It implies that the citizens are easy to be played by the politicians.

ReplyDeleteI believe that this clip is trying to imply how undecided voters play the biggest role as voters. They listen with an open mind and with general, common answers they then can easily decide by how safe they feel with the politician. This refers to them as unintelligent because they have no preference and side with anything that sounds safe or beneficial to the population without going into depth with details.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this clip is showing how candidates will do whatever and say whatever it takes to sway undecided voters their way. Agreeing with Mulan, I think it is very interesting how the audience applauds Mrs. Griffin when her only answer is 9/11 because that does not answer any question that they asked, but she see's how the voters react to her answer so of course she is going to keep telling them what they want to hear.
ReplyDeleteThis clip is showing that undecided voters are easily persuaded to vote for a candidate if the candidate is telling them what they want to hear. When Lois says 9/11 and they cheer for her it shows that they support her because she is referring to a time when there was a lot of patriotism in america.
ReplyDeleteNot being so familiar with the voting system, but at least from this clip i can see that there are some candidates who don't really have any plans can be getting on the stage and making something in charge. Funny point from this video is, all the humdrum answers are all associated with candidates outfit, black, meaning pointless, meaningless and dull.
ReplyDeleteI think this makes voters seem impulsive and very indecisive. It represents us in a way, meaning that we like vote for what we like to hear. And because of this, politicians say what we want to hear in order to get our votes. The voters in this video clip doesn't take anything else into consideration.
ReplyDeleteI think it brings into play how ignorant the voters are. It shows the voters as like a different society that cannot make up their mind. It even portrays the candidates as outlandish as well due to their remarks.
